How Long Can Sod Sit Before You Install It?

By CalTurf · Published · Updated

Quick answer

Plan to install sod the same day it is cut and delivered. Sod is a living plant, and stacked rolls heat up and dry out quickly, especially in Sacramento Valley summer heat. If you cannot finish the same day, keep the rolls shaded and moist and lay them as soon as possible. CalTurf cuts sod fresh to order so it reaches you at its best.

Why does sod need to be installed quickly?

Once sod is cut, the grass is still alive but cut off from its water supply. Rolled and stacked tightly, the grass cannot breathe and the center of the stack builds up heat. The longer it sits, the more the grass yellows and the slower it roots after you lay it. Fresh sod laid quickly is the easiest way to get a healthy lawn.

How does heat change the timeline?

Heat shortens the window. On hot Central Valley days, a pallet sitting in the sun can turn yellow in hours, so schedule the install for early morning and have every roll down and watered before the hottest part of the day. In cooler fall and spring weather sod holds up longer, but same-day installation is still the goal.

What should you do if you cannot lay it all in one day?

Move the leftover rolls into shade, keep them off hot pavement, and mist them lightly so they stay damp but not soaked. Unroll any pieces that start to feel warm in the middle. Lay the rest first thing the next morning and water it right away. Turning yellow or warm rolls is a sign to hurry, not to wait.

How do you plan so sod does not sit?

Finish removing the old lawn and prepping the soil before the sod arrives, and lightly water the ground about two days ahead as our DIY sod laying tips suggest. Order the right amount with the sod calculator so you are not left with extra rolls. Set a pickup or delivery time that gives your crew the full day, using our delivery and pickup page, then request a quote or call (530) 364-5155.

Common questions

Can I water sod while it is still on the pallet?

A light misting helps keep the outer rolls from drying out, but do not soak the pallet. Heavy watering adds weight and does not reach the center of the stack. Laying the sod is the real fix.

Is yellow sod dead?

Not always. Sod that yellows from sitting a short time often greens up once it is laid on moist soil and watered well. Sod that is dry, brittle or slimy has likely been stressed too long.

Does CalTurf sod sit in storage before I get it?

No. CalTurf cuts sod fresh to order at our farm in Davis, so it goes from the field to your pickup or delivery instead of sitting in a yard.
