Why Is My New Sod Turning Yellow or Brown?

By CalTurf · Published · Updated

Quick answer

New sod usually turns yellow or brown because it is getting too little water, too much water, or too much heat while its roots are still shallow. Brown, crispy edges and seams point to underwatering. Yellow, soft sod over soggy soil points to overwatering. Most new sod recovers once watering is corrected in the first two weeks.

Is your new sod getting enough water?

Underwatering is the most common cause. New sod has no deep roots yet, so it depends on you for every drop. Our watering tips after installation call for watering every day in the first week, preferably in the morning, and never letting the sod dry out in the first 10 to 14 days. Lift a corner of a brown piece: if the soil underneath is dry, water longer, not just more often.

Could you be watering too much?

Yes, and it looks different. Overwatered sod turns yellow rather than crispy brown, feels spongy, and the soil underneath stays muddy. Roots sitting in water cannot breathe. Heavy clay soil, common in the Sacramento Valley, makes this more likely because it drains slowly. Water in shorter cycles with a break in between, and see our guide to preparing clay soil for sod.

Why are only the edges and seams turning brown?

Edges and seams dry out first because air reaches them from the side. Gaps between pieces make it worse. Here is what to check:

Can heat or fertilizer burn new sod?

Both can. In Central Valley summer heat, new sod can stress within a day if it misses a watering, so morning watering matters most then. Too much fertilizer, or a strong fertilizer, can also burn grass. Our healthy lawn guide recommends avoiding fertilizers with any number higher than 10. Dog urine spots look similar: a brown center with a darker green ring. Rinse those spots with water soon after.

Will yellow or brown sod come back?

Usually, if the sod is still attached to the soil and the base of the grass is not dry and brittle. Fix the watering and give it one to two weeks to green up. If a patch is dead after that, replace just that piece. CalTurf sod is cut fresh to order at our farm in Davis. Request a quote or call (530) 364-5155 to order a few replacement rolls.

Common questions

How do I know if my new sod is dead or just dormant?

Gently tug on a blade near the base. If the base is still flexible and slightly green, it is alive and should recover with steady watering. If the blades and crown are dry and break apart, that piece is likely dead.

Should I fertilize brown sod to green it up?

No. Fertilizer will not fix a watering problem and can stress the grass more. Correct the watering first, then follow the normal fertilizing schedule once the sod is rooted.

Why did my sod turn yellow right after it was installed?

Sod can yellow if it sat stacked too long before it was laid, especially in hot weather. It often greens up once it is on moist soil. Our guide on how long sod can sit before installing explains how to avoid it.
